SHOPLOCAL SURVEY FINDS CONSUMERS IN THE PINCH WHEN SHOPPING FOR DADS AND GRADS
Shopper Worries Affecting Upcoming Holiday Purchases
CHICAGO – May 29, 2008 – Are consumers cutting back on important gifts for this busy shopping season (Father’s Day, graduations, weddings, showers, etc.?) Are they really spending less this year? And are they planning on using their rebate to fund these presents? A new ShopLocal survey to over 1,600 email subscribers found a strong YES, YES and a definite NO to these questions.
The comparison shopping respondents revealed strong opinions about what they can afford to do this year versus last year because of the latest economic reports:
- Sixty percent (60%) said they were spending less this year than last on gifts, with 59% responding that they will be spending less than $100. Only 5% plan to spend over $500.
- Sixty-six percent (66%) responded that they will NOT be using their tax rebate to purchase these items.
- Citing practical gifts over extravagant, 63% said they will be giving cash or buying useful items such as photo frames or bedding instead of computers, home theater systems or jewelry. Twenty-nine percent stated gift cards were another possibility.
- Fifty-five percent (55%) plan to shop both online and in-store, with weekly ads and promotions more available for online research.
